Porsche 718 Boxster Arrives with New 300 HP Turbo-Four Engine
Porsche’s mid-engine roadster gets a thorough refresh for 2017
Porsche has taken the wraps off its thoroughly updated Boxster.
Now known as the 718 Boxster and Boxster S, the new numerical prefix is a homage to the 1957 718, the successor to Porsche’s legendary 550 Spyder. Of course, there’s another familial connection, too – both the original and modern-day 718s are powered by horizontally opposed four-cylinder engines.
Both the new Boxster and Boxster S drop their flat-six engines in favour of a new 2.0-litre turbo-four. The standard Boxster is good for 300 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque, while the S is rated at 350 horsepower and 309 lb.-ft. of torque.
Both can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or Porsche’s dual-clutch automatic, lending to a zero-to-100 km/h time of 4.7 seconds for the standard Boxster equipped with the Sport Chrono package and dual-clutch gearbox, while the Boxster S punches in at 4.2 seconds.
